1963 Buick Riviera: A Time Capsule Restored
This stunning 1963 Buick Riviera has a rich history dating back to its purchase in Buffalo, New York on March 12, 1963. Originally used to tow a boat or trailer between Buffalo and Twin Lakes, Minnesota, the car underwent a repaint in the late 1970s. Unfortunately, the owner's illness in 1984 led to the car's storage in a barn for nearly four decades.
In 2023, the car was willed to its grandson-in-law, who, unable to restore it, sold it to an auto repair shop in Austin, Minnesota. The shop meticulously rebuilt the engine, brakes, fuel system, and added stylish new wheels. The car was then acquired by its current owner in early September 2023.
To rectify this, the restoration team undertook a complex process of rebuilding the original crossmembers and fabricating replacement floor parts. Once the support structure was restored, the new floor was installed and sealed. The entire floor was then coated with an epoxy etching primer, while original sheet metal received a rust-converting primer.
A Testament to Automotive Heritage
This 1963 Buick Riviera is a true survivor, a testament to its enduring quality and timeless design. Its restoration not only preserves a piece of automotive history but also showcases the dedication and expertise of those who brought it back to life.
A Brief History
The 1963 Buick Riviera holds a special place in automotive history, not only for its personal connection to its current owner, but also for its contribution to the legacy of the Buick Riviera itself.
First introduced in 1963, the Riviera was a ground-up design on a new GM E platform, marking Buick's first foray into the personal luxury car market. This front-engine/rear-wheel drive platform revolutionized the industry, showcasing a sleek and stylish design that captured the hearts of drivers. The Riviera remained a rear-wheel drive platform until 1979, when it transitioned to front-wheel drive.
Over its eight generations, the Buick Riviera garnered a loyal following, amassing a total production of over 1.1 million vehicles. While the Riviera name was revived for concept cars in 2007 and 2013, the 1963 model stands as a testament to the car's enduring impact on the automotive landscape.
